Glennville Recreation Department's (GRD) 8U All-Star Soccer Team was honored by the Glennville City Council at their Tuesday, March 1, 2022, meeting.

The 8U team won the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) District and State Tournaments in the winter of 2021. Glennville Mayor Bernie Weaver addressed the young soccer players, letting them know that the City was proud of their accomplishments and for their representation of Glennville in such a stellar way. He lauded them for going beyond the District title to take the State Championship trophy.

Mayor Weaver presented the soccer players with their State Championship Certificates and medallions, which all the players donned immediately.  A large group of parents and grandparents gathered for the occasion, with each team member receiving applause as each name was called.

The team is coached by Michael Sapp, and the team members are as follow: Tinsley Alexander (the sole girl on the team), Derek Gomez, Caleb Thompson, Grant Sapp, Jacob Juarez, Jesus Salgado, Fernando Chihuahua, Layton Gibbs, Gabe Sapp, Noah Flores, Angel Joya, and Pedro Sotelo. Glennville Recreation Director Logan McCullough was in attendance for the presentations, also.

"I am extremely proud of this team.  Our kids represented the City of Glennville incredibly well. This experience is something that these players, families, and I will never forget.  A huge thank you goes to these players for their dedication and hard work throughout their season.  A special thank you to Coach Michael Sapp for volunteering his time, putting these young people in the best position for success on and off the field. I also want to extend my thanks to the parents for sacrificing their time to make sure their child was at every practice and game.  We could not have had the season we did without you," McCullough said.
