“Our local students and college kids are now back on the road, so be aware of these inexperienced drivers on the roadways. Many are good drivers, but there are always those who lack the experience older drivers have. As parents, make sure you do a thorough check over their vehicle, and our sister company of South Tattnall Auto can assist you with this, too. Maybe windshield wipers need to be replaced, the oil changed, new filters, and even a new set of tires for your teenager or college student,” said Chris Driggers, and South Tattnall Auto can provide these services.

“We are continuing to stay busy at the collision center, and our time is improving significantly on getting your vehicle back to you as timely as possible. However, there is still some delay in receiving foreign vehicle parts,” said Chris.

One of their emphases at the collision center is advising their customers on insurance coverage, which is to have a $250 deductible on your comprehensive insurance, and this usually only amounts to a $10 to $15 a month increase in your insurance premium. When you have a huge deductible, such as $1500, your insurance premiums are naturally lower. However, when you have a vehicle repaired after an accident, you have to pay that first $1500 of the repair bill.

He also recommends that you have a rental clause on your policy, especially if there is only one vehicle in the family, or even two vehicles when you have teenage drivers. This also helps when you have a vehicle that is taking longer than expected to be repaired due to the inability to get the parts quickly.

Another recommendation is gap insurance, which is an optional vehicle insurance coverage that pays the difference between your vehicle’s actual cash value and the remaining balance on your loan or lease if your car is totaled or stolen. It protects you from owing money on a car you can no longer drive. If your car is totaled or stolen, regular auto insurance pays only the current market value (depreciated value) of the vehicle, minus your deductible.

Vehicles lose value fast, often 20 percent or more in the first year. If you owe $25,000 on a car loan, but the insurance market payout is only $20,000, you have a $5000 gap.

Gap insurance steps in to pay the remaining $5000 so you do not have to pay out of pocket.

“With the high cost of vehicles today, gap insurance is encouraged. For instance, the truck I have now cost me more than my first house. Many vehicles are priced over $100,000 today, so consider gap insurance since you could get caught with having to pay thousands for a repair bill because of the depreciated value of your vehicle,” advised Chris.

Also, Chris advises that when you have an accident while traveling or here at home, report your accident to your insurance company the day it happens. You do not want to wait four or five days after a vehicle accident.

“Even though you may be recommended to take photos of your vehicle after an accident for insurance purposes, you still need your vehicle placed on a rack for a full inspection. To be on the safe side, if you are traveling out of state and have the vehicle towed to a location other than Kenny Watson’s Collision Center, you will want to take photos from all angles before the tow truck leaves the scene with your vehicle. We can see about getting the vehicle back to us for a complete and thorough inspection, since much of the damage cannot be determined until it is placed on a rack,” said Chris.
