On Monday, September 25, 2023, the South Tattnall Middle School (STMS) Jr. Beta Club national winners were recognized at the Board of Education’s September meeting. Mrs. Kerry Waters, Jr. Beta Sponsor, introduced the group. This summer, the students competed against other students from 18 states in a variety of events.

ClaraJane Cowart, STMS sixth grader, was commended for her beautiful color photography entry that placed first in the National Elementary Beta Club competition. The Board members praised ClaraJane for her artistic talents. ClaraJane shared that the photograph was taken at Wormsloe Plantation in Savannah, Georgia.

Next, the STMS Jr. Beta Engineering team shared highlights of the club’s trip to Louisville, Kentucky, in which they traveled with members of the North Tattnall Middle School (NTMS) Jr. Beta Club. Asher Graham, Brantley Bouwense, Eli Bland, Walker Page, and Colt Todd competed in the Engineering competition. The team placed first at state with a flawless presentation of not one, but two elevators built out of recyclable materials; however, the national competition didn’t go quite as well. Although they had a small design flaw, the students still captured seventh place in the nation. This same group of young engineers will be competing again at the Georgia state competition in November as they attempt to build a rollercoaster within 45 minutes.

Mrs. Kerry Waters  thanked the Board of Education for their continued support of the county’s Jr. Beta Clubs and these outstanding members.
