Shawn Young
L to r: Long County High School (LCHS) STAR Teacher Andrew Walden, LCHS Principal Brian Thomas, and LCHS STAR Student Shawn Young.

Senior Shawn Young was named Long County High School's (LCHS) 2025 PAGE (Professional Association of Georgia Educators) STAR Student, with a ceremony held at Long County High School on Tuesday, February 4,  2025.  He named teacher Andrew Walden as his STAR Teacher, who has had a tremendous positive influence on Shawn’s educational endeavors.  The two were feted at an event hosted by the Long County Chamber of Commerce.  Shawn is the son of Shawn and Kim Young.

To obtain this honor, a high school senior must have the highest score on his/her  SAT and be in the top ten percent of students in their class based on their Grade Point Average (GPA).

Andrew Walden was Shawn's Honors Physical Science and Chemistry teacher. Young spoke highly on his experiences with having Mr. Walden as his teacher.

"I enjoyed his classes the most during my time here," Young said. "He was a very engaging teacher, and I loved learning science."

Young has made a pursuit of excellence in the field of technology during his years at Long County High School. He was actively involved in Skills USA where he competed in podcast production and video game design.

He also successfully completed the Certified Network Technical Program at Coastal Pines Technical College during this past fall semester by studying in the dual enrollment program.

Young has already been accepted to Georgia Tech where he intends to study Computer Science and, hopefully, to begin a career in either Analytics or Software Development.

Andrew Walden had high praise for Young. He touched on his level of intelligence, dedication, and perseverance in high school.  Walden also had great faith in Young's abilities, which he believes will carry Young far beyond the confines of high school.

"Shawn is an incredible student," Walden said. "He's inquisitive, he's smart, he's enduring, and he will not stop. I have full confidence that he's going to be exactly what Long County schools prepare for college."

Rachel Moore of the Altamaha Federal Credit Union presented Young with a small gift. Refreshments followed the presentations, which were supplied by the Long County Chamber of Commerce, the sponsoring organization for the event.
