At the Friday, August 23, 2024, meeting of the Glennville Downtown Development Authority (DDA), Sec. 42-222 Signage of the City Ordinance and amendments to the ordinance were discussed with the following addition of "(b) Other means of promoting businesses in store front windows such as posters, printed materials, painting windows, or decorating store fronts are allowed to include colored lighting. Items placed must be free of any lewd, racist, or derogatory materials or images." These changes, if approved, refer to inside store windows and not what is placed on the outside of store windows in downtown Glennville from Hwy. 301 to Tillman Street.
Another amendment discussed was in reference to sidewalk signs, that they can contain a chalkboard or dry-erase board writing area. Currently, dry-erase boards are not included for sidewalk signs.
All outside planned signage for the Glennville downtown area must be reviewed and recommended by the Glennville DDA prior to approval by the City of Glennville officials.
Additions discussed included but not limited to "construction-grade brown paper in vacant windows to include covering the entire window and glass doors and to be redone/inspected every six months to ensure the neat and tidiness of the window or streetscape." This refers to store buildings vacant for a period exceeding 60 days with this covering from the top of the window frame to the bottom of the windows.
Another DDA proposal was that only one neon sign, indicating open or closed to be allowed, and not to exceed 24" x 24".
Neon signs affixed to the outside of the downtown store buildings were also discussed, especially with the application made to the DDA on July 19, 2024, for a 2 foot x 12 foot lighted VAPE sign on the roof canopy of the vape shop at 103 W. Barnard Street, directly across from The Stage at Barnard.
An update was also given on the Stage at Barnard area improvements, with the new fence and electrical now installed.
