Valdo Gutierrez is proud of his restaurant, Tacos La Chona, which opened on July 7, 2022, in Reidsville at 260 Brumby Avenue. The restaurant is named after his mother, Sandra Arizmendi.
The name originates from a nickname Sandra’s sister would call her when they were little “Chana”. When Sandra met Valdo’s dad, Ubaldo Gutierrez, he called her a variation of this nickname “Chona.” While Sandra hated that nickname, she now appreciates her son for naming the restaurant after her.
“My mom is my number one supporter, and she is my favorite person in the world. She has a very beautiful heart, and she is so hard-working. She does not need anything from anyone; she will do it herself. On top of all of that, she is fighting cancer,” Valdo said. “There is no greater love on the Earth than the love of a mother.”
Valdo and his three siblings: Alejandro Gutierrez, Maribel Gutierrez, and Santana Campos, were born and raised in Reidsville. It brings Valdo pride to know that he is starting his business in his own community.
Valdo is just 33 years old, but he is an entrepreneur with big dreams. He also has a food truck that he utilizes to travel around surrounding counties with a limited menu. His main goal is to put smiles on people’s faces, whether they eat at his restaurant or not.
“I want to bring to this area the best taco shop anyone has ever been to. I have so many ideas, and I hope I can make some noise all over Georgia,” Valdo said. “People deserve good food. My main goal is to be able to help kids and bring them joy. I want to show kids that they are our future and to never lose love and respect for one another.”
Valdo truly is pursuing a career that makes him happy. After trying out several careers, Valdo found that he most enjoyed working in the restaurant industry.
In the kitchen, Valdo is mainly self-taught and often “does his own thing.” He has six staff members at Tacos La Chona, who have been doing a great job, even when the restaurant is busy.
“I am very blessed to have so many people supporting me,” Valdo said. “Business has been good. I will accept whatever circumstances God gives me. The Lord is my number one, and I try to pray more than I worry.”
