Tattnall Canning Plant opening for the summer on May 31

The Tattnall County Canning Plant will open for the summer from May 31 to July 8, 2022, at Tattnall County High School (TCHS) for all common and specialty canning products.

The plant will be open for customers Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Common canning products include tomatoes, potatoes, squash, green beans, carrots, sweet potatoes, peanuts, peas, beans, greens, berries, figs, and peaches. Specialty canning products can include tomato juice, soup, salsa, and ketchup. 

Blanching for freezing is available for peas, beans, greens, squash, corn, and okra. It is the customer’s responsibility to wash, peel, cut, and package products into the can. It is the Ag Ed Staff’s responsibility to assist customers and cook the products. 

Corn processing is available by appointment. Corn processing can include shucking, silking, blanching, creaming, and bagging for the freezer. Customers can use the facilities and equipment to process and bag their own corn, if they prefer.

Cans are 85 cents each, blanching is $2.50 per bushel, and corn is 15 cents for shucking and silking, and  15 cents for blanching, creaming, and bagging.  Customers must provide their own bags for corn.  Customers can also choose to use their own jars for all products other than corn, at 25 cents per quart. 

TCHS is located at 1 Battle Creek High School Blvd in Reidsville. The canning plant is located behind the blue building on the left side of the high school. For more information, call (912) 557-8999.
