Tattnall County Engineer Dennis Odom announced that spot leveling will be conducted on seven roads in the county, which are small sections on each one.
He explained at the Monday, August 5, 2024, County Commissioners’ meeting that the spot leveling is for sections of the road where several potholes have been filled or the road is breaking apart. These roads are Cedar Creek Church Road, Old Manassas Collins Road, Fid Mosely Road, Bubba Kennedy Road, Bea Durrence Road, Beards Creek Church Road, and Harris Kicklighter Road. The total estimate if $40,433, but the final price is expected to come under the budgeted amount.
Another road related issue referred to Garden Circle/Garden Road and right-of-way deed authorizations, which are needed. Odom explained that 60-foot rights-of-way are needed to allow the county to maintain the roads in this area of homes located off Hwy. 292. When the county accepted the roads in 2015, a deed was not requested from the developer for the right-of-way. Odom will proceed with the securing of right-of-way deeds from the property owner.
He also commented that the resurfacing on Love’s Chapel Road and Harmony Church Road has not been completed.
The first layer of one inch will be followed by another inch and a half, to be followed by striping. Within the next two weeks, these roads are expected to be completed.
A proposal was also presented by Jackie Jones, representing a community-based organization that is concerned with the alleviation of flooding on 130 properties in the City of Reidsville, which include her own. She gave a packet from Anthropocene Alliance on a proposal for a 20-acre preserve and wetland, which would be assisted by a grant. The affected properties are in the Reidsville City limits, and she commented that the County can come in as a partner and own it or the County could partner and choose not to own the area. County Attorney Tom Peterson questioned the county services expected. Commission Chairman Jackie Trim thanked Ms. Jones for the proposal that will be reviewed.
Another road related item was the comment from Lenton Butler on Tom Rogers Road off Bubba Kennedy Road. He stated that a farmer has “pulled the ditches,” but allowed the debris to be placed back onto the sides of the road. Butler said he would like to see the county clean out the ditches, leveling the road when they do so. The issues mentioned will be reviewed.
