On Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2022, the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery (GVMC) in Glennville will host a ceremony at 11:30 a.m.
The cemetery is located at 8819 U.S. Hwy. 301 N./Veterans Blvd., according to Cemetery Director Ernie Cowart.
Elements of Ft. Stewart's 3rd Infantry Division (ID) will participate in the event, along with members of the Glennville Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #8379 and American Legion Post #95. Keynote speaker is LTC Joseph Handke, Commander of 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team for the 3rd ID at Ft. Stewart, Georgia. Georgia State Representative Bill Werkheiser will also deliver comments.
This is the 15th annual Memorial Day Ceremony for the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville. The Glennville cemetery is part of the Veterans Administration network of cemeteries for veterans and the second state-operated cemetery in Georgia, with the other located in Milledgeville. The cemetery opened on November 28, 2007, with a dedication ceremony and had its first burial on December 7, 2007. It is now the resting place for over 2,100 veterans, spouses, and dependents.
