Several Glennville Garden Club members attended the 64th Annual Oleander District Meeting on the campus of Ogeechee Technical College in Statesboro, Georgia, on Wednesday, October 5, 2022. These included President Pam Waters, Vice President Margaret Barnhill, and members Salena Rentz and Laura Potts-Wirht.
The theme for the meeting was "Protect our Green Spaces and Plant us Beautiful," and the event was hosted by several of the member clubs.
The 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. event included greetings from Peggy Tucker, Georgia Garden Club President, from Hartwell, Georgia, and Genelda Reese, Oleander District Director. Several well-deserved awards were presented to industrious, energetic garden clubs in the district. A silent auction raised over $1000, and the raffle of 23 baskets raised another $1200, which will be placed in the district's scholarship fund.
Shirley Lewis of the Windsor Forest Garden Club was awarded as the Outstanding Garden Club Member of the Year. She has been a member of her garden club since 1970 and has been involved in both her club and the entire Oleander District, serving in flower judging.
The meeting ended with an informative presentation by Campbell Vaughn, a Master Gardener, who is a University of Georgia (UGA) Extension Agent for Augusta-Richmond County. He specializes in residential design and has a Bachelor of Science degree in both Agriculture and Landscape Architecture. His PowerPoint highlighted "Great Native Plants for Landscaping," with numerous tips shared on various tree varieties.
