A head-on crash on Harmony Church Rd., near the intersection of Deloach Medlock Road in South Tattnall County on Friday, October 28, 2022, around 2:11 p.m., involving a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu 2LT driven by Jalen Jamal Byrd, male, 23, of  Georgia, and a 2016 Western Star tractor trailer driven by Joey Albert Ward, male, 48, of Mount Vernon, GA, injured two. The Malibu is owned by Ashley Duffany.

The crash resulted in air evacuations to Memorial Medical Center of Savannah for Byrd and his passenger Hance Larsen, male, 24, also of Glennville, who was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. Both Byrd and Larsen sustained serious injuries in the accident. Ward was not transported.

According to the accident report completed by the Georgia State Patrol, Byrd and Larsen were traveling west on Harmony Church road when their vehicle suddenly veered in to the path of the oncoming tractor trailer.  The Malibu struck the Western Star tractor trailer almost dead center of the front bumper.  The impact occurred in the eastbound lane, and after impact the Malibu rotated clockwise and traveled about 40 feet before coming to rest on the north shoulder facing north. The Western Star tractor trailer traveled east about 278 feet before coming to rest in the south ditch facing east.

According to local residents, the Harmony Church road had restricted traffic for several hours due to the accident.  A mailbox belonging to a local resident was damaged.

Jalen Byrd was cited for failing to maintain his lane. Joey Ward was not cited.
